Abstract
A review of the literature on the addition of halogens to ethylenic compounds reveals the fact that some of the factors have been investigated more completely than others. Many special reactions have been studied with regard to one or two aspects only. It is possible to classify the various factors studied under several headings. Williams and James (Trans. Chem. Soc. 343 (1928)), in reviewing this field, state that in aqueous solutions, the rate of addition of bromine to ethylenic compounds is very rapid. The reaction in non-aqueous solvents is affected by a number of factors, and in what follows it is discussed under the following headings:-
1. Kinetics.
2. Effect of the halogen,
3. Environment of the double link in the molecule.
4. Effect of solvent.
5. Effect of radiation, A. Light, B. Heat.
6. Effect of Catalysts.
