Abstract

This study examines the labour market in Wellington, New Zealand for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals, and how this market changed between 1991 and 1996. In particular, it investigates whether a significant "emerging" market exists, and the characteristics of positions in the emerging market. Content analysis was applied to 200 position advertisements from Wellington newspapers in 1991 and 1996. Positions were classified as "traditional" or "non-traditional" based on job title and the extent to which primary LIS skills and qualifications were required. It was found that a significant emerging market for LIS professionals potentially exists but that a diverse range of skills and experience are needed in addition to those provided by LIS training. Areas for further research are suggested.
