This study seeks to define Virtual Reality (VR) in terms of its history, technology, and the communication paradigm it embodies. The study is based on the assumption that VR, as a commercial technology, is likely to begin appearing in the market place within five years and will approach ubiquity by the year 2000. The research shows that VR is an interactive interface computational technology with the ability to generate sensory simulacra which create the illusion for a user that s/he is inside another reality other than physical reality. Furthermore, the study indicates that VR is still evolving as a technology and as a science. It is expected to have many applications in computation, teleoperation, entertainment and telecommunication. VR will come to Aotearoa/New Zealand, according to the research, and it appears likely that it will bring with it the potential to alter the structure of wealth, work and social values.en_NZ
