Utilisation and fit of Intranet technologies in a public library

Abstract

Effective communication and information sharing are vital in the functioning of an organisation. Intranets use the Internet's technologies to improve both internal communication and information dissemination processes. However, the adoption of new technologies in the work environment is wasted if they are not utilised. Using the task-technology fit theory, that a technology matching the task is the main factor in determining utilisation, Intranets were matched against Manukau Community and Information Services to determine if there was a fit. A fit was found between Intranets, but implementation ofintranets would demand: a shift in the organisation's culture towards information sharing; a movement from print materials to online information; users must take responsibility for their information needs; and an investment in ongoing training.
