Abstract

Joint design in timber construction has been a limiting factor in the development of timber application. Some recent joints in timber design have enabled designers to create a wide range of structural forms with much greater ease. The purpose of this report is to record the state of the art in timber jointing; how it has affected or influenced architecture in the recent past and how it may continue to do so in the future. The report is conceived to act primarily as an architectural designer's source to illustrate the options available, that may not be widely known or used. It is hoped that this report will encourage and stimulate further consideration of the possibilities in timber construction and the way qualities of timber as a structural material are expressed not only through form but also in joint detail.
