Abstract

In previous work on divalent titanium, little has been done by which the true valency of the titanium could be defined. While it is commonly agreed that titanium does form a number of compounds in which it would appear to have a valency of two, it has not been conclusively proved that the divalent compounds form simple ions, and not the complex type of ion of the so-called dichlorides of niobium and molybdenum. However, divalent titanium is reported as having strong reducing powers and reactions consistent with simple positive ions of valency two.
