In 44 BC C. Julius Caesar, dictator perpetuus, was preparing to leave Rome on a campaign against the Dacians and Parthians. He therefore called a senate meeting for the Ides of March at which he intended to announce his plans for the administration of the capital during his absence. It was immediately before this meeting had begun that Caesar was assassinated.en_NZ
