Many adult non-fiction paperbacks in New Zealand public libraries are in poor physical condition due to widespread use and poor treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the kinds of preservation considerations certain departments make when purchasing and maintaining adult non-fiction paperbacks for public libraries. The methodology involved targeting the ten most populated cities in New Zealand. The public library networks within these cities were chosen because they are 'high use' libraries. A non-random sampling technique was used to gather respondents who met strict criteria in the acquisitions, in-house bindery and repair/mending departments of New Zealand public libraries. Further to sending print questionnaires, an analysis of four Collection Development Policies was also conducted. The findings indicate the selected public libraries do make preservation considerations when purchasing and maintaining adult non-fiction paperbacks. Examples of preservation considerations made when purchasing paperbacks include the durability for public library use and the authority/significance of the publisher. Examples of preservation decisions made include correct temperature, light and humidity in the library to minimise deterioration of stock. Covering with plastic and spine stiffening are popular methods of preventive conservation used within libraries. Finally, patron demographics and the library's role in the community are types of environmental assessments that contribute to the overall decision making process when purchasing and maintaining adult non-fiction paperbacks.en_NZ
