In 1964 the ratio of Maori to Pakeha (white New Zealanders) was 1 to 2 in the male prisons and borstals and 1.14 to 1 in the female prisons and borstals. Compared with the ratio of Maori to Pakeha in the total New Zealand population which was estimated to be 1 to 13.7 in 1964 (N.Z. Official Year Book 1965) the number of Maoris in New Zealand prisons was very high (see Table 1).en_NZ
