Availability and access to Maori language children's books in New Zealand public libraries

Abstract

Maori language children's books are a part of New Zealand's children's literature. These books are seldom discussed in the literature which addresses their English language counterparts. As use of the Maori language is becoming more common, demand for Maori language books is increasing. This study addresses the access and availability of Maori language children's books in New Zealand public libraries. In order to establish the principle access points (excluding Maori medium education) school libraries, the Books in Homes programme and key publishers were also involved. This research took a sequential mixed methods approach involving both surveys and interviews. The resulting study revealed that public libraries, school libraries and the Books in Homes programme were all important for providing access to Maori language children's books.
