Abstract
This report is a historical review of the development of Earth Architecture from the earliest crude cave dwellings to the sophisticated buildings of today. It covers past and present construction techniques, considers the role of subterranean buildings in the revival of energy awareness, and looks closely at the range of applications and advantages associated with this style of Architecture. The final section discusses the role of Earth Architecture in New Zealand with the conclusion that earth sheltered buildings have just as many advantages in our temperate climate as they do in regions of climatic extremes.
