Abstract
This research was conducted through interviews and information sourcing. The focus of the study is on a selection of baches, in the small seaside community of Makara.
A particular emphasis on the research method and techniques have been included to act as a reference for future research of this kind.
Conclusive evidence highlights the incremental changes made to baches, over a significant period of time. The demands on these buildings have altered with the changing needs and attitudes of their owners. Originally simple huts for spasmodic use, their role has changed to cater for permanent occupancy. Unlike the urban counterpart whose role has always been defined as a place of permanent occupancy - the bach has had to be modified, becoming a more complex building as to assume its new role.
