Abstract
Detoxication Mechanisms
Foreign organic compounds are metabolised by the various detoxication mechanisms in plants and animals. These reactions may be divided into two main groups, the synthetic conjugation reactions and the non synthetic reactions such as oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis and dechlorination.
Although the term detoxication implies a reduction in toxicity, in many cases the metabolite may be more toxic than the material absorbed.
