Abstract
The volcano Mt. Tarawera lies at approximately latitude 38° 12' on the eastern shore of Lake Tarawera in the North Island of New Zealand (see Map no, 1)* and is part of the Rotorua Rhyolite District of Thompson (1964) an area of rhyolite domes, lava flows, ash showers, and small quantities of basalt all largely of Pleistocene age.

The mountain itself is spread over an area of about 10 square miles. The larger part of this area is shown on the mosaic photograph at the end of the photographs.
