A small scale qualitative study was undertaken to identify factors which influence the choice of professional development activities by information services staff working at public libraries in New Zealand. Current issues including the recent global financial crisis and uncertainty about the future of public libraries, and continuing rapid changes in technology, meant that research into this area was appropriate. Also, the professional registration for librarians introduced by LIANZA had been operating for four years so it was appropriate to see how this was affecting PD choices. The main findings were that intrinsic rewards, such as personal interest, are more important motivators than extrinsic ones, such as possible financial benefit. Barriers to participating in PD activities include cost, time, and travel. Age of participant, and uncertainty about the future of public libraries were not found to be factors. The requirements of the professional registration scheme affects staff members' choice of PD activities, and the recent global financial crisis and rapid changes in technology were also found to be influences. These findings can help library mangers and training providers to plan PD so that it aids library staff in the best possible way.en_NZ
