This thesis deals with barriers to trade for the importation of goods into the New Zealand market. Since competition becomes sharper in a globalising world, legal restrictions and other obstacles gain importance in international trade. It is noteworthy that there are open restrictions, but also hidden and disguised obstacles. Since 1984, New Zealand has transformed its economy from a heavily regulated and protected economy into a very liberal and deregulated economy. Nevertheless, New Zealand has restrictions for the importation of goods as well. Thus, the objectives of this paper are to examine what kind of trade barriers exist in New Zealand, and whether or not these barriers are legitimate barriers in international trade law. The paper documents the development of the New Zealand economy, and explains the present status of New Zealand's economy. The significance of international trade for the nation's economy is illustrated. New Zealand's engagement in international trade agreements and their effects on the country's legislation is identified. A range of trade barriers is examined in general and in relation to New Zealand. Last, but not least, the thesis investigates two of the most significant markets in New Zealand more in detail. All investigations and examinations will demonstrate that New Zealand has not created significant trade barriers and obstacles for the importation of goods. The nation is further ahead than most other countries, and has more than satisfied its international obligations. The remaining restrictions are justified by provisions of international agreements. Thus, New Zealand deserves its reputation of having one of the most open, liberalised and deregulated trade regime in the world.en_NZ
