Abstract
This dissertation offers a comparative chronology of the potting and painting of Exekias. First a chronological list is drawn up for each type of vase (that is, neck-amphorae, Type A amphorae and so on), based on a comparative analysis of the profiles drawn to a common scale; seven features of the painted decoration are then isolated which show a development in support of the shape-based ordering: These allow integration of the individual lists, as well as providing a set of criteria for the inclusion of vases of other shapes not so well represented in Exekias' extant corpus. A full comparative chronology results. The remainder of the dissertation is devoted to description and analysis of the painted decoration on the individual vases, and ends with a brief discussion of recurrent decorative features such as the lotus and palmette frieze.
