The study of kinetics of halogen substitution has developed almost entirely during the last forty-five years, beginning with isolated experiments which have been extended to cover a large number of compounds. Recent work has been of a more systematic nature, and several theories have been evolved to explain the mechanism of substitution. This introduction is intended as a brief survey of previous work on aromatic halogen substitution.en_NZ
