Abstract

This research focuses on the architecture of Karen Bausman and Leslie Gill. The report examines the architects' investigations into the nature of volume and the definition of a non-spatially driven architecture. The intention of the study is to describe the nature of the spaces created by Bausman-Gill Associates with reference to the volumetric and planar experiments they have undertaken. The report is divided into five chapters. The first four chapters systematically describe themes which arise through the collective works of the architects, and offer a critique of Bausman-Gill Associates published works. The final chapter uses a single residential project to test these ideas. The report explores captured universes, contained within experimental maquette boxes, and examines the techniques and implications of 'collaged space' in architecture. This study also looks at Bausman-Gill's use of the 'mark of the hand', their investigations of materiality, and the adherence to painterly illusion as a model for architectural experience.
