As part of my third professional year of study for a Bachelor of Architecture degree at Victoria university, I enroled in the landscape design course (ARCH 322) run as an elective by Frank Boffa. This awakened an interest in landscape architecture as I began to see that there is more to the profession than I had previously thought. I have always admired the works of Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyl and the grand gardens of Andrê De Nôrtre. The integration and unity of landscape and building that is very strongly presented in their designs is in marked contrast to many of the efforts that are made today. I have three main aims with this report: 1. To uncover the reasons behind the current attitude towards landscape architecture that prevails among the public and is apparent in the related design professions. 2. To present ways in which this attitude may be changed and for landscape architects to be able to contribute more fully to a design. 3. to Txamine the relationship between architecture and landscape architecture. In order to achieve these aims the report firstly traces the history and evolution of the landscape architecture, documenting the major influences and changes that have shaped the profession into what it is today. This was compiled through library research. The western style of landscape architecture is predominant in our culture today and it is on the rise and falls of this style that I have concentrated on.en_NZ
