Abstract
New Zealand (estimated 2001 population 3,864,129) is a young nation that has spawned a wealth of literature detailing the experience of colonial pioneers and more recently new immigrants. New Zealanders as a nation and people are still searching for identity in an increasingly multi-cultural society that has come a long way from the colonial days of the first half of the twentieth century. In autobiography, first hand accounts of personal lives will prove invaluable to social historians to come. This study explores the diverse range of self-expression through the medium of autobiography and its social context
