The purpose of this investigation is to examine the occupational adjustments of individuals of subnormal intelligence with a view to making suggestions for their guidance. All the cases studied have been ex-pupils of special classes for backward children. The problem presented by these ex-special class pupils was felt to be an urgent one requiring thorough investigation. A number of overseas investigations have been carried out on this subject. several are rported in T.B. Hill's - The Education of Mentally Handicapped children (1937) However the only survey undertaken in New Zealand is that done by C. T. Ford and P. A. Hickllng for Dr. R. Winterbourn. winterbourn, Ralph - Educating Backward Children in New Zealand (1944), P. 245 - 256. In this survey, the homes of thirty-six ex-special class pupils of both sexes were visited and discussions held with the boys and girls themselves and with the parents. However, none of the employers were interviewed and a central group was not used. The writer felt that an additional investigation confined to males and including both of the above mentioned features, would be useful.en_NZ
