dc.description.abstract Hyperfine interactions are the prime source of interest of Mössbauer spectroscopy to the chemist, and in this chapter there is a brief discussion of such interactions. The basic equations to be used later in the discussion of experimental results are given. Topics of more general interest to the physicist such as the basic theory of emission and absorption of gamma radiation, lattice dynamics and relativity and the relation of these topics to Mössbauer spectroscopy are not discussed. en_NZ
