dc.description.abstract The aim of this thesis is to explore a compositional approach to a stylistic crossover between jazz and electronica. The exegesis focuses on identifying a number of tools, techniques and approaches that are used in the creation of a portfolio of works that demonstrate a stylistic amalgamation between jazz and electronica. The individual portfolio works have been composed while maintaining a balanced position between the distinct perspectives of jazz and electronica composition. The exegesis investigates a wide array of techniques and methods borrowed from jazz and electronica compositional practices respectively, with the intention of re-appropriating them into a compositional approach to this particular stylistic crossover. There are numerous ways to approach such a stylistic crossover and this project aims only to create one such way, while initiating a discussion on technology’s role as a tool for the contemporary composer-producer and its role in my composition process. en_NZ
