dc.description.abstract In an effort to assess the library resources that are published by the academic staff of the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington an evaluation of the main library collection was conducted by analysing the citations cited in the Staff Publications and Theses and also on Science Citation Index between 1992 to 1996. This study indicates 87.29% of total citations were in the form of journal articles, which make up an important area of the School. Chemists tend to cite more established type of journals such as cited Journal of Chemical Society (all sections) than physicists, who cite a smaller body of literature in a wider subject area such as the Physical Review (all sections). Of the total number of journals cited. 45.3% were held in the Victoria University library. There is a static trend in the chemistry department in citing articles over time and the total number of publications does not impact on the total number of citations. In the physics department the total number of citations appear to have fluctuated over time and again there is no impact on the total number of citations. Chemists on average, self-cited less than 20 percent of the journal articles analysed between 1992 to 1996, whereas the physicists on average varied between 10-30 percent en_NZ
