dc.description.abstract An annotated bibliography for researchers of the law and legal history in early New Zealand. Focuses on texts that provide explanation and commentary of the law published between 1864 and 1954. Aims to not only be a practical tool for the identification and location of useful texts but also to illuminate key themes in New Zealand's legal history. Central themes include the movement away from English laws to New Zealand-specific laws; the law regarding the family unit reflecting changes in attitudes to women and children; distinct laws for Maori and European New Zealanders; the development of infrastructure to facilitate law-making; distinctions in the style and type of publication pre- and post-1900. Serials, case law, and reprinted statutes, with no accompanying commentary or annotations are excluded. en_NZ
