dc.description.abstract The advent of digitisation has introduced new forms of reference resources. This has given rise to much concern about the ability of children to effectively select and use reference resources for homework assignments and class projects. This research examines the factors influencing intermediate students' decisions when selecting and using reference tools to complete their homework assignments and class projects. A qualitative research methodology was applied in conducting this investigation. Students' views and responses were captured in structured interviews. The study involved 20 students from Newlands Intermediate School, with an equal number of year 7 students and year 8 students represented. Students were required to describe their most recent research project, then explain where they went first to find information and why they used their chosen reference tool to complete their research project. The study showed that there were four main factors that affected students' decisions to use specific resources. These included; teachers' expectations, students' habits, ease of use and convenience of reference resources. The study also revealed that information overload created a dilemma for some students. A number of strategies for helping students to develop necessary skills when selecting and using reference resources have been highlighted in this study. en_NZ
