dc.description.abstract This project seeks to ascertain how well collection development policy addresses the impacts and issues arising from multimedia (MM) resource format shifts. To this end, the collection development policy of tertiary academic libraries in the greater Auckland region, relating to MM resources, was surveyed and relevant policy content was then analysed to see which of these impacts and issues are addressed. Relevant library staff members from these institutions were interviewed to determine what the perceived impacts and issues arising from these MM format shifts are. The policy analysis and interview findings were then compared and it was found that current policy is quite reactive and predominantly addresses issues that have arisen from past format changes without providing much guidance for decision making regarding future MM resource format shifts. The policy gaps identified in the findings can be applied to policy development and better planning to ensure that libraries make the best use of the limited funding resources available. This will enable academic libraries to maintain relevant, up to date, and accessible MM collections whilst not losing key resources through obsolescence. en_NZ
