dc.description.abstract This selective annotated bibliography is intended for Young Adult readers between the ages of 13 and 18 and is limited to published novels and short stories that have fairy tales as the basis for their plots or that feature recognisable fairy tale characters. The bibliography spans the years 1962 to 2007 because this is the period that has seen a flowering of written works that take the motifs, stories and characters of traditional fairy tales and use them to retell these tales. The purpose of this bibliography is to ease access to a wide range of novels and short stories re-telling fairy tales for a Young Adult audience and to motivate their use with this audience. The novels and short stories are all in English but may feature tales from cultures other than European. Plays are not included and there is one book of poetry. The intention has been to produce a resource providing Young Adult readers who wish to read re-told fairy tales for pleasure or as part of their English studies with a list of suitable titles, available in New Zealand, that they can choose from according to their own purposes. en_NZ
