dc.description.abstract The Chinese have had a long involvement in New Zealand and particularly with Otago. It was the gold fields of Otago that provided the impetus for the Chinese to come to New Zealand. As a minority group coming to a colonial land the New Zealand-Chinese were subject to prejudices and legislative discrimination. Despite this, the New Zealand-Chinese have made a valuable contribution to the cultural and economic wellbeing of Otago and New Zealand. The primary intention of this bibliography is to provide a finding aid to researchers investigating the Chinese in Otago before 1920. The bibliography has been divided into nine categories. These categories are: archaeology, biography, fictional accounts, general resources, gold mining, immigration, miscellaneous resources, missionary resources, New Zealand-Chinese. Within each category entries have been arranged chronologically with the most recent items appearing first. This bibliography provides enhanced access to the information resources through the co-location of references, the annotated entries and the general and author indexes. It is hoped that this bibliography will prove useful to future research and increase awareness of the contribution the Chinese have made to Otago en_NZ
