dc.description.abstract The major part of the literature emphasizes the theoretical value and potential of XML for information services rather than identifying its actual use and application within them. This research is intended to inform about XML usage in libraries and thus attempts to fill this gap. The methodology is based on a theoretical section, which describes the basics of XML and its ability to facilitate information management and communication processes in libraries. The main section utilizes an online questionnaire to determine the use of XML, factors and reasons involved with its implementation, the utilization of library management systems and XML's impact on them, the current knowledge of XML and related technologies, and benefits and challenges of XML perceived by systems librarians. The results have shown that the theoretical potential of and areas of application for XML are clearly defined and seem countless. In spite of this, academic libraries appear rather cautious in the use of it. Staff training seems to be the key factor for any decision-making about XML. The reasons for using it are consistent with the advantages of XML described in the literature. The answers and comments by respondents have demonstrated that systems librarians seem aware of what XML means or could mean to libraries, no matter what skills are available at present. en_NZ
