Lifeblood to the community : community information service : definitions, models and survival information work in Wellington, N Z

Abstract

This essay examines a range of definitions and models to explore the nature and boundaries of community information and community information service. A key theme is the responsibilities and role of the public library regarding community information service provision. A composite model of community information service, based on key variables identified in the library and information studies literature is presented. This can be used to characterise existing services, and to plan services. Agencies with an involvement in survival information work in Wellington city are identified, and characterised by comparison to the composite model. Key developments and issues impacting on information provision and access to information in New Zealand are discussed.
