dc.description.abstract Outsourcing or contracting out is affecting a greater number of New Zealand libraries, both public and academic. However there are few works written on outsourcing in New Zealand libraries. Many libraries in other countries have already experienced what New Zealand libraries are now facing. It is the main purpose of this essay to analyse this information, as described in the professional literature, looking at both the pros and cons and judge what are the most likely transformations to occur as this practice may or may not be further introduced into New Zealand libraries. It would be a useful resource for a library management team faced with outsourcing, and assists both library managers and their staff to understand and work through issues related to outsourcing. It is important to recognise that outsourcing could have a major effect on New Zealand library staff and the services offered to library users. It is also important that managers and staff are aware of and prepared to face these challenges. This enabled the conclusion to be reached that outsourcing in New Zealand libraries could be an effective management tool, and could enable libraries to realise benefits such as cost savings. However outsourcing should be carefully approached, and planned and detailed contracts are necessary to ensure that no problems with vendors arise. en_NZ
