Studies on Procyliosoma tuberculatum Silv. (Diplopoda: Oniscomorpha)

Abstract

An historical account of the classification of the Diplopoda from 1664 to 1847 is given. Methods for maintaining Procyliosoma tuberculatum Silv. in captivity are discussed. Detailed accounts of the external morphology and internal anatomy of the adult are given. The process of moulting is described together with a description of the colour pattern of newly moulted specimens. Two examples of limb regeneration in immature stages are recorded, together with an account of asymmetrical appendages in adults. A general account of post-embryonic development from 6- to 12-tergite stages is given and the development of the first tergite, anal valves and telopods is described in detail. Increase in length and weight from 6- to 12-tergite stages is dealt with, and the time spent in these stages is compared with that in a Polydesmid Millipede. The made of copulation is described. An undescribed species of Rhigonema Cobb (Nematoda: Oxyuroidea) is recorded from the gut. Ectoparasitic hypopi of Tyroglyphid mites are recorded, and an episooic fungus Myriapodophila sp.n. (Spegazzini & Thaxter) (O. Laboulbeniales) is recorded. A few ecological observations are given and a list of localities from which this Millipede has been collected (based on Museum collections) is appended.
