The field work in preparation for this thesis was done in the academic years, 1951-1952, and during the summer holidays afforded the writer while studying at Victoria University College Wellington. During 1951, the author was sponsored by the U.S. Educational Foundation as a Fulbright Exchange student. During 1952, he was enrolled as a private student.
Tho geologic and geomorphic maps were based on topographic sheet No. N161, the Rimutaka Sheet; topographic sheet No. N165, the Onoke Sheet (unpublished, no contours); topographic sheet No. N168, the Palliser Sheet (unpublished, no contours); topographic sheet No. N165-9, the Martinborough 1:25000 Sheet.
Trig stations and heights were taken, from the Survey District Sheets of one mile to one inch Cadastral Survey Series. The flood and flood control map is a copy of an unpublished map prepared by tne Wairarapa Catchment Board. The contour map of palliser Bay was drawn by the writer from a recently completed sounding chart of that area by officers of the Survey Ship H.M.N.Z.S. Lachlan, copy of which was supplied by Mr. J. Brodie, Geophysical Survey, D.S.I.R. |
