dc.description.abstract This research report is a study of the potential utilisation of sustainable exotic timbers other than Radiata pine and Douglas fir as substitutes for non-sustainable timbers. It discusses the importance of the world's forests and how logging of non-sustainable timbers is resulting in their destruction. The local use of non-sustainable timbers and present knowledge of alternative timbers is analysed through a survey of Wellington architects. Alternative timbers are examined through literature review and site visits while timber properties in general described. Recommendations are made suggesting end uses of the sustainable timbers and particular timbers that could be used instead of the currently used non-sustainable timbers. Wellington architects have little knowledge of the sustainable timbers and almost exclusively use non-sustainable timbers when radiata pine and douglas fir are not suitable. Sustainable alternative timbers are available and can meet all end-uses currently meet by non-sustainable timbers, from fine finishing work to hard wearing exterior uses. en_NZ
