dc.description.abstract This is a study carried out to evaluate existing pedestrian access routes in Wellington and to conclude with a design guide for future proposals. This guide is intended as a design tool for the architect/city builders and should form a good checklist. Resulting from preliminary investigation, the components of an access route are identified. These are: 1. The Entry 2. The Path Through Building 3. The Elements of Path 4. The Building Fabric. Each of these components identified is important in assisting and informing people using these routes to commute to and from the City Commercial strip. A survey of existing access routes recording those components identified provides invaluable data from which a critical examination contrasting the good and bad can be carried out. In Section Three, a design guide is produced in the form of statements. These statements shall form the basic principles to assist designer in future proposals. en_NZ
