Acoustic design for audio-visual studios : a case study

Abstract

By following the development of a practical design example, this report illustrates two major aspects of acoustic design :- designing the acoustic insulation necessary to control the ingress/egress of unwanted sound in accordance with given criteria, and designing the shape and surface treatment of room boundaries to determine the acoustic performance of the enclosure. The report begins with an account of the acoustic design brief, initial site visit and commissioning of an environmental noise survey, then moves on to consider methods of predicting acoustic performance, the formulation of design solutions and detailed design. The report concludes with the description of an experiment designed specifically to examine the applicability of published absorption coefficients data and to establish coefficient values for a range of absorber units using the reverberation room method.
