Post graduation evaluation of VUW BArch graduates: (1979-1989)

Abstract

A selection of BArch graduates from Victoria University of Wellington was surveyed in an attempt to study the match between architectural education and professional careers. The survey provided information on their background in work experience, education, the kind of work they did, and their views on architectural education. Relationships between key aspects of the graduates background and career paths were also considered. It was found that the majority of graduates were involved in organizations largely providing general practice services. Results also showed that the smaller number of graduates involved in other specialized fields was from the more recent graduating years. It was also found that the majority of graduates who obtained some work experience related to the building Industry showed a greater standard of academic achievement and had acquired registration status earlier. As regards to architectural education the majority of graduates indicated that the development of design skills needed to be given more emphasis. Other areas that they felt needed attention were Contractual matters, on site construction techniques and production documentation. A large majority also indicated that exposure to the practice environment was essential to students. On the other hand a significant majority of graduates expressed they had not expected the nature of everyday activities of architects: they seemed overwhelmed by the fact that so little time was spent designing. More time was spent in day to day business type operations. A prominent number of students indicated they were as students, mistaken in thinking that they would have control over what got built. A significant number of graduates expressed the opinion that the school provided a good balance in the curriculum. Considering that the majority of graduates were involved in general practice architectural work, their views on education address the needs of that environment.
