This paper was written in response to the current situation in Wellington's inner urban area, which owing to the steady decline in residential population over the years, has become wasteful, poorly utilised, and lacking in diversity and human dimensions. The problems with New Zealand's traditional housing patterns, as well as the problems with the inner city are explored, and a case is made for the re-establishment of an inner city residential community. The paper concludes that the whole concept of the separation of home and work place is at the centre of the issue and this could be successfully addressed by bringing people back into the centre of the city. |
