dc.description.abstract The characteristic properties of the ethylene linkage are the capacity for direct addition of reagents such as halogens, halogen hydrides and sulphuric acid, the susceptibility to attack by oxidising agents and the tendency to polymerize. Decolourizing of bromine water and alkaline permanganate are qualitative tests, ozonolysis is used to identify the position and polymerization has commercial applications in the manufacture of plastics. en_NZ
