dc.description.abstract By measuring the areas under the absorption bands of the spectra of anthracene in ethanol, chloroform and hexane, it has been calculated that the lifetime of the excited state of the anthracene molecule differs in these solvents, the maximum difference being 14%. The relative fluorescence efficiencies of anthracene in various solvents have been determined, and after correcting for several sources of error differences are still present. Minor uncertainties are present owing to bending of light at the face of the fluorescence cell. en_NZ
