dc.description.abstract This report is for artists, craftspeople, architects, interior designers, corporations and other people interested in commissioning or using art or craft in or around buildings. Enough history is covered to point out the current state of the relationship between art and architecture but no more. "An historical account is of no use as it hints at revival - the world as we know it today and as we can only guess at of its future must find a new relationship between art and architecture - one that recognizes and acknowledges current lifestyles and architecture". Parry, W. Fine Art and Architecture, sub thesis, Auckland, 1974, p1. I look at the reasons for integrating art and architecture, how it can be done, how to form an understanding and professional working relationship between artist and architect and how to find appropriate solutions to the task of creating a better built environment. The aims of the artist and architect are briefly investigated. This is because it is imperative that these aims are compatible. Incompatible aims will result in incompatible art and architecture. This research report is about the integration of art and architecture as opposed to mere ornamentation or decoration of architecture. These latter terms connote something applied or added rather than designed with collaboration between the artist and architect. en_NZ
