dc.description.abstract This report investigates the little documented topic of architecture which stands in contrast to the natural landscape. Architectural theorists establish certain modes of response to the natural landscape. An analysis of one of these, the mode of contrast, forms the bulk of this report. This analysis discusses the vocabulary of the architecture of contrast, with reference to the personal design philosophies of some of it's principle exponents. The result of the analysis expresses the need for reference to both Nature and Man in all architecture. Hence there is a need for the architecture of contrast to be harmonious with it's regional natural context. en_NZ
