dc.description.abstract An improved method is described for measuring the range-ionisation relation for alpha particles in argon using a proportional counter with field adjusting tubes to eliminate the end effect. The operation of the counter is checked in detail and it is found that a theory of gas multiplication due to Keck is in good agreement with experiment. A possible extension to the measurement of the energy per ion pair variation with energy in argon is considered. en_NZ
