dc.description.abstract This report explores the issues which are pertinent to stadium design. It begins by examining the evolution of the stadium building type. The history of the stadium is traced from ancient times through to the present day. The report then goes on to determine the issues which are essential to designing a modern stadium. The final stage is a review of five stadia in the Wellington Region. Two of these are existing and theother three are proposals. One proposal is a refurbishment of an existing stadium whilst the other two are for completely new stadia. Examination of each issue is performed upon each of the five stadia. A recommendation is then made that Wellington's existing stadia are inadequate and that the solution that would best serve the needs of the Wellington region is the proposal for the disused railyards in Wellington City. en_NZ
