dc.description.abstract This report examines the motivations, processes and mechanisms of heritage conservation, and relates their applicability to heritage conservation in New Zealand. It identifies that the motivations for heritage conservation inform the decision as to what conservation processes may be appropriate, for any given building or site. Two characteristics, authenticity and significance are found to be key factors which also influence this decision. These factors, combined with the processes of conservation, form the basis of a conservation guide, which allow an informed decision to be made relating to heritage conservation. en_NZ
