dc.description.abstract This report wishes to define what layering is. It was found to be categorised into three parts: literal, phenomenal, metaphorical. Layering is the placement of elements in such a way that one is aware of the juxtaposition either literally, phenomenally or metaphorically. Layering is a technique used to enhance the sensual perception of architecture (literature, motion pictures, painting, photography and sculpture). Literal layering is layering immediately sensed by the viewer. It enables the layperson to appreciate the qualities of the layered phenomenon. Phenomenal layering is not evident from the first reading, a second, third or even forth reading may be required to seek our the qualities of layering. Metaphorical layering embodies the layering of ideas, meaning and symbolism. en_NZ
