dc.description.abstract In attempting to study the architect's function in domestic design I hope to gain an insight into one of the most difficult, rewarding and mysterious areas of architecture. An insight to a people process where success depends as much on talk, argument, discussion, analysis, and understanding as on design brilliance. The process, it is said, parallels the cutting of a suit, the tailoring must be precise. The parallel, however, does not do justice to the unmeasurably great importance of building a home, which will influence the way of life of generations of individuals as yet unborn. Does one learn the necessary skills, by reading and study or through trial and attempt? It is the second course which has been choosen and explored. The results have been surprising; not a strict uncompromising analytic procedure as one would expect, but an adaptable human approach. en_NZ
