The management of change in New Zealand national sporting organisations

Abstract

Sport is now a major business in New Zealand. It has become an integral dimension in New Zealand's social and economic life, shaping many areas of society. Rapid change in sport and its provision has increased the need for organisation leaders to effectively and efficiently manage change, ensuring their organisation's future success and survival. This research aimed to explore all aspects regarding change in New Zealand sport. The literature review revealed a need for further exploration in the topic of change management within New Zealand National Sport Organisations (NSOs). Leaders of all 83 New Zealand voluntary NSOs were approached to participate in this research and a response rate of 66% was achieved. Quantitative data and qualitative insights regarding organisational change were obtained from a survey, providing necessary breadth and depth to the research. Analysis and interpretation of this information allowed development of a 'rich picture' regarding change management in and affecting NSOs. Key findings of this research include identification of the source, effects and dynamic nature of key change drivers in New Zealand sport and its future provision; examination of the forces promoting and inhibiting change in NSOs and exploration of NSOs current readiness and ability to change. Implications for change management occupy the final chapter. This incorporates a participatory change management process aimed at ensuring future organisational development and implications regarding the management of successful organisational change.
